Sukau Ranforest Lodge

The 20 rooms, multi international award winner, named by National Geographic Adventure magazine in 2009 as one of the top 50 jungle lodges in the world and a finalist in the 16th World Travel Awards 2009 as one of the world leading ecolodges, is managed by Borneo Eco Tours. Built in 1995 in traditional Malaysian architecture using several Borneo hardwood species, it went through a major RM2 million renovation in 2010. It is built on stilts with a bar lounge, gift shop, Gomantong Hall meeting place, education centre, Hornbill Boardwalk with two elephant passes, three open decks for wildlife viewing, an enclosed garden, a riverside Melapi restaurant, open sun-deck, river jetty. All rooms have attached bathroom and shower water is supplied through rainwater harvesting and hot water by solar heaters. Air is cooled by cross ventilation air currents and ceiling fan. Lighting is supplemented by oil lamps using recycled cooking oil. River tours are conducted by boats powered by electric motors and four strokes outboard engines.


Day 1

  • On arrival at Sandakan Airport before 0800 hours, transfer to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre for a video show.
  • Trek ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden plank walks to witness the feeding of the orang utans at 1000hrs.
  • Continue to Sandakan jetty for 2 1/2hrs boat journey to multi awards winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge along Sabah's longest river, Kinabatangan with opportunity to view birds and wildlife in virgin mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitats.
  • Late afternoon take a river cruise using electric motor in search of some of the 10 primate species. Sukau is home to Borneo pygmy elephants, orang utans, proboscis monkeys and all eight species of hornbill in Borneo.
  • Return for solar heated hot shower, candle light dinner overlooking the riverbank and slide show conducted by naturalist guide.
  • Overnight at the award winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge, named by National Geographic Adventure magazine in 2009 as one of the top 50 jungle lodges in the world.
  •   (Lunch / Dinner)

Day 2

  • After breakfast, return to Sandakan by boat.
  • Have lunch before we proceed for a short tour of Sandakan town including the market, Agnes Keith Museum and Australian War Memorial.
  • Transfer to airport for the late afternoon flight back to Kota Kinabalu. End of Tour.
